history

1860 to 1940: Syrian orphanage in Jerusalem

Bekaa Plain in Lebanon

The German pastor Johann Ludwig Schneller , born in Württemberg, founded the Syrian Orphanage in Jerusalem in 1860 . Under the management of the Schneller family, the orphanage, which offered care, education and vocational training for generations of students, continued to develop. Around 1900 the area of the Syrian Orphanage was the largest contiguous building complex outside of the walled old city of Jerusalem. The orphanage survived the First World War and then continued its service until the beginning of the Second World War. Pastor Hermann Schneller, the founder's grandson and then director of the facility, was deported to Australia by the British Mandate Government at the start of the war. All properties of the former Syrian orphanage in Palestine were expropriated in 1948 because they belonged to German citizens.

The orphanage was moved to different locations. Bethlehem and Nazareth in Palestine as well as Chimlan and Zahlé in Lebanon each became new locations for a short time.

1951 until today: Schneller School in Lebanon

In 1951 Hermann Schneller returned to Lebanon from exile and, after a long search, rented a hotel in Zahlé , one of the most important cities in the Bekaa plain . There he went back to school with 12 orphans. On March 24, 1952, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new orphanage in Khirbet Qanafar, West Bekaa . The first buildings were ready for occupancy at the end of November. Initially, the facility was still under the original name of "Syrian Orphanage", then it was given a new name with "Johann Ludwig Schneller School". To avoid repossession, Pastor Hermann Schneller had all the property of the newly founded Johann Ludwig Schneller School registered with the "National Evangelical Church of Beirut". Since 1972 the church has had this responsibility in partnership with the Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools (EVS) and the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (EMS). The Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools has two seats on the local administrative bodies.

tasks

Church of the Johann Ludwig Schneller School

The aim of the Johann Ludwig Schneller School is to enable disadvantaged children to grow up healthy - regardless of their origin, nationality, religious affiliation or gender. The motto is "Education for Peace". A total of 101 children lived in the JLSS boarding school in the 2018/19 school year. The children are between three and twenty years old and divided into “boarding school families”. All Christian and Muslim denominations of Lebanon are represented. Most of the students are Lebanese, but there are also Syrians and Palestinians.

In addition to the boarding school children, another 154 day students from the surrounding area attended the school. A school-leaving qualification or vocational training is offered depending on the students' talents and capabilities. The vocational training program covers the following occupational fields: car mechanics, industrial mechanics, carpentry, electrics and tailoring.

The school has about 70 employees: educators, teachers, trainers, skilled workers, administrative staff, cooks, bakers, a school doctor, psychologists and others.

About 100 acres of arable land are part of the JLSS area. Parts of it are used to grow apples and olives or are leased to the well-known Lebanese winery Château Ksara . The school's own bakery produces bread and baked goods, mostly based on German recipes, for personal use and for sale.

civil war in Syria

Since many families are fleeing to Lebanon before the civil war in Syria , the school management of the JLSS took in Syrian refugee children as early as 2012. During the war and on the run, the girls and boys experienced violence, religious demarcation or the loss of a parent - many of them are severely traumatized. Over 40 of these children have so far been accepted into the Schneller School's boarding school. They all receive free lessons, school meals, teaching materials and psychological support.

In addition, the school offers single mothers Syrian mothers a short training in their workshops. In the courses, for example, the refugee women learn to sew and, after successfully completing them, can work independently and earn money.

Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools eV

The Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools eV (EVS) supports and accompanies the work of the Johann Ludwig Schneller School in Lebanon.

Education for peace in the Middle East is an idea that Johann Ludwig Schneller implemented as early as 1860 with the establishment of the Syrian Orphanage. He gave orphans and children from poor families a home regardless of their religion, enabled them to attend school and vocational training and thus offered them the chance of an independent life. The EVS still sees its special task in supporting this idea today.

In addition to seeking donations for the two Schneller schools in Jordan and Lebanon, the association provides information about churches and Christians in the Middle East at events and in its publications, especially in the Schneller magazine, which appears four times a year.

Until 1994 the EVS was called "Association for the Syrian Orphanage" . This “Association for the Syrian Orphanage”, based in Cologne, was brought into being by Ludwig Schneller to support and promote the facilities. The EVS is a founding member of the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity - Community of Evangelical Churches and Missions and sees its work as part of the worldwide ecumenical relations in the EMS Fellowship. It works in partnership with the supporting churches of the Schneller schools, both of which are member churches of the EMS.
