history

In 1860, Christian Friedrich Spittler commissioned Johann Ludwig Schneller from Württemberg to found an orphanage in Jerusalem. Christian children who had lost their parents in the religious unrest in Lebanon and Syria should be accepted. Schneller traveled to the then province of Syria and came to Jerusalem in November 1860 with nine children. This was the beginning of the Syrian Orphanage .

In 1889 the " Evangelical Association for the Syrian Orphanage " was founded in Cologne to support and support the facilities in the Middle East. With the help of donations from Germany, the orphanage was continuously expanded. At the end of the 19th century, the Syrian orphanage was already housing over 200 children. After Johann Ludwig Schneller's death in 1896, his son Theodor and later his grandson Hermann continued the orphanage. At the beginning of the Second World War, however, the German institution in Jerusalem was closed and was not allowed to continue even after the re-establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

Theodor Schneller's sons decided to continue the work in the neighboring Arab states. In 1951 Hermann went to Amman with seven children and then to the Lebanese Bekaa plain . Not far from Zahlé , in Khirbêt Qanafâr (Khirbet Kanafar), the Johann Ludwig Schneller School (JLSS) was opened on March 24, 1952 . Today it is worn by the National Evangelical Church of Beirut (NECB).

Ernst Schneller, who took over the management of the Evangelical Association for the Syrian Orphanage in Cologne from his uncle Ludwig Schneller in 1949, was one of the initiators of the Theodor Schneller School (TSS) in Amman, Jordan on November 11, 1966. He left Cologne for this purpose to Amman. Today the TSS is sponsored by the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East .

In 1994 the Evangelical Association for the Syrian Orphanage was renamed " Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools eV ".

The association currently has 296 members.

Areas of activity

The EVS supports and promotes the work of the Schneller schools in the Middle East as well as the associated work in the parishes and the care of the friends' groups.

The task is in particular to enable children in need in the Schneller schools to be educated, as well as to provide school and vocational training. This is done by accompanying the sponsoring churches in their responsibility and contributing to the further development of the schools.

The association is a founding member of the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (EMS) and sees its work as part of the worldwide ecumenical relationships in the EMS fellowship. The EVS therefore works closely with the EMS office, the management of the EMS member churches in the Middle East and the Schneller schools. In addition, the association coordinates its support with the Swiss Association for the Fast Schools in the Middle East (SVS) and the Friends of the United States of America.

The Schneller Foundation - Education for Peace

On November 11th 2007 the EVS founded the " Schneller Foundation - Education for Peace ". The income is intended to secure the future of the two Schneller schools in the long term. When it was founded, the foundation capital was 1,085,000 euros. Thanks to numerous endowments, it was able to be increased to almost two million euros (as of 2019).

As is usual with a foundation , only the income from the endowments may be used for the work of the Schneller schools. In particular, Christian peace education, as it is practiced today in both schools, is to be promoted. The peaceful coexistence and mutual tolerance of the different religions and traditions is an essential educational goal of schools.

The Schneller magazine

The "Schneller Magazine" appears four times a year in German and English. Current topics from the Arab world are described and linked to the life of the students at the two schools. The "Schneller Magazine" places a special focus on the situation of Christians in the Middle East. The magazine is produced in cooperation with the school principals on site and is written by Katja Dorothea Buck and Dr. Uwe Gränke edited.

The magazine has a circulation of 12,000 (as of 2019).
