The Theodor Schneller School is an educational institution in Jordan . She continues the work of the " Syrian Orphanage " built in 1860 in Jerusalem. The school is supported by the Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools (EVS) eV from Germany.

history

1860 to 1940: Syrian orphanage in Jerusalem

The German pastor Johann Ludwig Schneller , born in Württemberg, founded the Syrian Orphanage in Jerusalem in 1860 . Under the management of the Schneller family, the orphanage, which offered care, education and vocational training for generations of students, continued to develop. Around 1900 the area of the Syrian Orphanage was the largest contiguous building complex outside of the walled old city of Jerusalem. The orphanage survived the First World War and then continued its service until the beginning of the Second World War. Pastor Hermann Schneller, the founder's grandson and then director of the facility, was deported to Australia by the British Mandate Government at the start of the war. All properties of the former Syrian orphanage in Palestine were expropriated in 1948 because they belonged to German citizens.

The orphanage was moved to different locations. Bethlehem and Nazareth in Palestine as well as Chimlan and Zahlé in Lebanon each became new locations for a short time. In 1951 Hermann Schneller returned from exile and looked for a new location in Lebanon. At the end of 1952 he was able to move into the newly opened orphanage in Khirbet Qanafar, on the West Bekaa plain, with the remaining children . Initially, the facility was still under the original name of "Syrian Orphanage", then it was given a new name with " Johann Ludwig Schneller School ".

1959 until today: Schneller School in Jordan

Ernst Schneller, who took over the management of the Evangelical Association for the Syrian Orphanage in Cologne from his uncle Ludwig Schneller in 1949, was one of the initiators of the Theodor Schneller School (TSS), which was founded in 1959 in Amman , Jordan . To do this, he went from Cologne to Amman. The school was named in memory of Theodor Schneller , the eldest son of the teacher and missionary Johann Ludwig Schneller , who took over the management of the Syrian orphanage after the death of Johann Ludwig Schneller in 1885. To avoid repeating expropriation, the newly established school was registered with the local Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East . In the course of the 1980s and 90s, the administrative and content-related responsibility for the establishment of this church was transferred. The Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools , however, still has two seats on the local administrative bodies. The school is currently run by Khaled Freij.

tasks

View of the olive trees

The aim of the Theodor Schneller School is to enable disadvantaged children to grow up healthily - regardless of their origin, nationality, religious affiliation or gender. The motto is "Education for Peace". This concept is unique in the region. In the school year 2018/19, a total of 256 pupils and 47 young people attended the school. 63 boys and 17 girls lived in the boarding school and 14 boys and 10 girls were registered in the kindergarten. In living together, children of Christian and Muslim origin learn what it means to respect one another and live together in peace. This is how the various religious festivals are celebrated together.

The school goes through to secondary school. After that, some of the students can be transferred to one of the training workshops. There are state-recognized apprenticeship positions in the joinery, locksmithing and car repair shop. The training areas hospitality, hairdressing, cosmetics and mechatronics are newer.

terrain

Only a small part of the area is built on. In addition to the boarding school, the school and the workshops, there is a church, a soccer field, a swimming pool, a guest house, a playground and various houses for employees. The cultivation of olive trees has expanded in recent years.

The TSS has a guest house with 50 beds in simple single, double and triple rooms. The school welcomes day groups and offers guided tours on the premises.

Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools eV

The Evangelical Association for the Schneller Schools eV (EVS) supports and accompanies the work of the Theodor Schneller School in Jordan.

Education for peace in the Middle East is an idea that Johann Ludwig Schneller implemented as early as 1860 with the establishment of the Syrian Orphanage. He gave orphans and children from poor families a home regardless of their religion, enabled them to attend school and vocational training and thus offered them the chance of an independent life. The EVS still sees its special task in supporting this idea today.

In addition to seeking donations for the two Schneller schools in Jordan and Lebanon, the association provides information about churches and Christians in the Middle East at events and in its publications, especially in the Schneller magazine, which appears four times a year.

Until 1994 the EVS was called the Association for the Syrian Orphanage. This association for the Syrian orphanage was founded by Ludwig Schneller , based in Cologne, to support and promote the facilities. The EVS is a founding member of the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity - Community of Evangelical Churches and Missions and sees its work as part of the worldwide ecumenical relations in the EMS Fellowship. It works in partnership with the supporting churches of the Schneller schools, both of which are member churches of the EMS.
