Johann Ellerborn (* 14th century in Bad Münstereifel ; † around 1440) was a lay judge and mayor of the imperial city of Aachen .

Live and act

The son of the aldermen of the same name came from an influential family that had previously been based in Münstereifel and initially wrote Elreborn and after moving to the city of Aachen produced numerous officials there. Johann's brother Peter Ellerborn became mayor of the city of Cologne .

Johann Ellerborn himself was elected mayor of the Free Imperial City of Aachen for the first time in 1414 , when he was obviously not yet a member of the college of lay judges. During this term of office he belonged to the delegation together with the incumbent mayor of lay judges, Konrad von dem Eichhorn , who, as representatives of Aachen, observed the Council of Constance and reported on it to the city. In 1420 at the latest, Ellerborn seems to have been accepted into the college of lay judges, since he has been named as such in the relevant documents since then. He was elected several times to the council and again in 1420, 1425, 1429 and 1436, this time as aldermen-mayor of the city of Aachen.

Johann Ellerborn was married to Margarethe von Brachel from Bad Münstereifel, with whom he had at least two sons and daughters each. His eldest son Thomas Ellerborn followed him to the college of lay judges and later became mayor himself. Through his son Peter, Johann became the grandfather of the future mayor Johann Ellerborn . His daughter Mechtild married the mayor Johann von der Hagen . According to several sources, he either died around 1440 in Bad Münstereifel or was at least buried there in an old family grave.
