Johann Friedrich Matthei

Johann Friedrich Matthei (* 1790 in Rodenberg ; † April 26, 1874 in Witzenhausen ) was a German architect and rural Hessian master builder . He is considered to be an important master builder of classicism in what was then Kurhessen.

Life

After studying mathematics and architecture at the University of Rinteln, which at that time belonged to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel, he practiced civil engineering (then called road construction) and finished his studies at the University of Göttingen.

He first worked in Schaumburg, before he worked for a master builder in Allendorf ad Werra from 1817, but in 1821 he became the electoral master builder of the Eschwege and Witzenhausen districts, where he was responsible for the construction of public buildings. a. Churches, parsonages, schools, mills, forestry offices as well as road and hydraulic engineering. Between 1821 and 1854 he completed 22 church buildings. From 1840 he was only responsible for the Witzenhausen district, which he looked after until 1870.

His grandson was the painter Theodor Matthei , a member of the Willingshausen painters' colony .
