Johann Gottfried Strauss

Johann Gottfried Strauss (born August 8, 1718 in Merseburg , † 1779 ) was a German Protestant court preacher .

The son of the deacon at St. Maximi in Merseburg, Johann Samuel Strauss (1686–1731), attended the Stiftsgymnasium in Merseburg and then the University of Leipzig . In 1742 he successfully passed the master's examination at the preachers' college and was ordained in Merseburg in 1743. He received his first pastor in Röcken , and in 1747 he went to Lauchstädt . There he married Rahel Christiana Heun. In 1760 he became superintendent in Wurzen and in 1768 superintendent at the cathedral in Merseburg . In 1771 he was appointed third court preacher at the Sophienkirche in Dresden, where he worked until his death.
