Johann Karl Anton Haller

Johann Karl Anton Haller (born March 29, 1948 in Munich ) is a German linguist and professor of machine translation at the same chair at Saarland University (UdS).

Life

Johann Haller studied Latin, French, Spanish and linguistics in Munich from 1969 and graduated in 1973 with a state examination. He then worked as a researcher on the CONDOR project at Siemens and at the same time began his doctoral studies at the University of Regensburg , which he completed five years later as a Ph.D. completed.

In 1980 he began teaching as a DAAD lecturer at the University of Brasília , where he taught computational linguistics and German language and culture, among other things . In the following years he was also a visiting professor for computational linguistics at various universities in South America (including Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City) and in Paris. Between 1985 and 1990 he also took on the post of Managing Director at EUROTRA-D, the German department of EUROTRA, a machine translation project.

Haller has held a professorship for machine translation at the UdS since 1990 and is also head of the Institute for Applied Information Research (IAI), where he works on various research and development projects. In addition, he worked for many years as an evaluator for EU commissions, universities and various governments and until 2009 repeatedly held visiting professorships in several countries in Europe, South America and Canada.

In 2008 Haller worked at the UdS to ensure that students who did not need tuition fees from the university were repaid.

Johann Haller has been retired since 2011, but he was granted a special permit so that he can continue to research and teach at the UdS.

• CLAT (Controlled Language Authoring Technology), a program for quality assurance in technical documentation
