At times he also attended the SPD party school .

During the First World War , Meyer, who had been married since 1910, joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD). In 1920 he finally joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). For this he worked since 1921 as a full-time functionary. In 1921 he became secretary of his party in Nuremberg . Later he was a member of the KPD district leadership in Northern Bavaria and from 1924 to 1930 Polleiter.

In 1924 he was imprisoned for six months for illegally continuing the KPD - which was temporarily prohibited. In the same year he was elected for the first time as a member of the Reichstag for constituency 26 (Franconia) , to which he belonged until 1933.

Meyer was arrested in the summer of 1933. After a two and a half year prison sentence, he worked as a wallpapering assistant until the end of the war. In 1945 he started his own business as an upholsterer in Nuremberg. Although he rejoined the KPD after the war, he no longer appeared politically.
