Johann Schneider (theologian)

Johann Schneider (* 1963 in Mediasch , Romania) is regional bishop of the provost district Halle-Wittenberg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Life

Schneider moved to Germany with his family at the age of 22, first completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker and then studied theology in Neuendettelsau , Tübingen , Munich , Erlangen and Rome . In 2004 he received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a thesis on the Orthodox Church: Metropolitan Andrei von Saguna from Sibiu . As a pastor and lecturer, he worked at the University of Erlangen, the Diakonisches Werk der EKD and the Lutheran World Federation . In 2007 he became theological senior church councilorin the church office of the EKD in Hanover. On November 18, 2011, he was elected the first regional bishop of the new provost town Halle-Wittenberg and was introduced to his new office on June 24, 2012 with a church service in the Marktkirche in Halle . He started his service on July 1, 2012.

Schneider is also canon of the United Cathedral Donors of Naumburg, Merseburg and Zeitz and has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Diakoniewerk Halle since March 2014 .
