Johann Stephan Anton Diemel (born December 6, 1763 in Soest , † March 31, 1821 in Elberfeld ) was an Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ) doctor and writer.

He is considered to be the pioneer of the “green policy” in the Elberfeld and beyond. He campaigned for the creation of green spaces , in particular in 1807 he initiated the creation of the " Hardt " landscape park in Elberfeld. This makes him the founder of one of the first, if not the first public parks in Germany.

In 1817 Diemel received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from Heidelberg University .

In honor of Johann Stephan Anton Diemel, a monument was erected on the Hardt in 1824 by the Cologne sculptor Peter Joseph Imhoff . It is one of the oldest surviving citizen monuments in the Rhineland.
