Johann Zwettler

Johann Zwettler (born September 27, 1941 ) is a former Austrian banker and was a long-time member of the Board of Management of BAWAG and, from 2003 until the BAWAG affair, its General Director.

Life

Zwettler, son of a post office clerk, graduated from the University of World Trade in Vienna . He completed this in 1964 and then worked in accounting in industry. In 1966 he moved to BAWAG and was appointed to its board in 1995. In 2002 he was unanimously appointed by the Presidium of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB), the sole owner of the BAWAG PSK Group, as the successor to General Director Helmut Elsner , who will retire at the end of April 2003 . In the course of the Bawag affair, he resigned as General Manager at the end of 2005, despite a contract that ran until 2007, in order to bring calm back to the bank. He was succeeded by Ewald Nowotny . During the Bawag trial, Zwettler was sentenced to imprisonment for unfaithfulness in the "Caribbean shops" , which he did not have to serve due to health problems. In 2019, he was charged with involvement in serious fraud and breach of trust in the course of the Refco lending process.
