Johanna van der Gheynst (also Jeanne van der Gheynst , Johanna van der Gheenst ; * around 1500; † December 15, 1541 ) was briefly the mistress of Emperor Charles V in 1521 and mother of Margaret of Parma , who was governor from 1559 to 1567 of the Habsburg Netherlands .

Life

Johanna van der Gheynst was the daughter of the carpet maker Gilles van der Gheynst and his wife Johanna van der Coye. Her parents lived in Nukerke near Oudenaarde . She entered the service of Charles I. de Lalaing, governor of Oudenaarde and baron of Montigny, and was probably the baroness's maid.

As a young man, Emperor Charles V met the beautiful Johanna when he was visiting the castle of Baron von Montigny in Oudenaarde in the autumn of 1521. A fleeting love affair developed between them, from which a daughter Margarethe emerged. This came first into the care of the Brussels family de Douvrin. Charles V made no secret of his relationship with Johanna and officially recognized Margarethe as his daughter in 1529. Margarethe would later become governess of the Netherlands.

The emperor granted Johanna van der Gheynst a modest annual pension. On October 13, 1525 she married Jean van den Dyke, who was a lawyer and member of the Brabant Chamber of Accounts. The couple had several children. Johanna died in 1541, her husband on September 1st, 1572.
