Joan of Ghilany
Johanna von Ghilany ( 1864 in Vienna - January 7, 1888 in Berlin ) was an Austrian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).
Life
After her artistic training, Ghilany made her debut at the Lübeck City Theater in 1883. Even there, her voice was so conspicuous that in 1884 she was engaged at the Berlin Court Opera. There she sang in the world premiere of Ernst Frank's opera Hero that same year . There, however, they seem to have expected her to do tasks that exceeded her capabilities.
Although she had great success with games like "Azucena" in Troubadour , "Amneris" in Aida and "Ortrud" in Lohengrin , she developed pneumonia until she collapsed in 1886. After surviving this, she sought a cure in Italy, but in vain. Despite self-sacrificing care, she died on January 7, 1888, at the age of just 23/24.
She was buried in the St. Hedwig cemetery in Berlin . The tomb has not been preserved.
