Johannes von Nepomuk Chapel (Nordkirchen)
The octagonal Johannes-von-Nepomuk- Chapel in Nordkirchen was built in 1722 by the architects Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius and Peter Pictorius the Elder . J. built. The client was Ferdinand von Plettenberg , whose coat of arms is above the door, a minister of the Prince-Bishop of Münster .
In the 19th century, the chapel served as the burial place of Count Maximilian Friedrich von Plettenberg (1771–1813), the last descendant of the builders of Nordkirchen Castle and the chapel. After the First World War , the chapel was used as a war memorial and provided with appropriate panels. In 1922 the chapel became the property of the municipality.
Above the altar is the painting Martyrdom of St. Johannes von Nepomuk by a master named Witte, estimated to be in the year 1722.
The altarpiece and chapel are among the oldest evidence of the veneration of the Bohemian Saint John of Nepomuk in Westphalia.
The interior of the chapel can be visited between May and November.
