John I (Trebizond)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes I. Axuch Komnenos († 1238 ) was Emperor and Grand Comnene of Trebizond from 1235 to 1238 .

Life

John was the older son of Alexios I , the first emperor of Trebizond , and his wife Theodora Axuchina . In 1235 he succeeded his brother-in-law Andronikos I to the throne.

The period of his reign was short and essentially uneventful. It ended abruptly in 1238 when he was killed while participating in a polo game that was very popular among nobles at the time . After his death, his son (or younger brother) and heir to the throne Johannikios was forcibly placed in a monastery. Instead of him, Johannes' brother Manuel I ascended the throne. For the second time since the establishment of the state, the son of a deceased ruler was passed over to the throne in favor of another relative. This happened for the first time in 1222, when Andronikos I , the son-in-law of Alexios I , succeeded him on the throne. However, some sources could suggest that Johannikios inherited his father at least for a short time before he was deposed and sent to the monastery.
