The Johanneskirke around 1880

The Johannes kirke (German Johanneskirche ) was a church in Oslo , which was designed by the then well-known architect and city planner Georg Andreas Bull .

history

The church was consecrated in 1875 and demolished in 1928. It was on Rådhusgata, between Akersgata and Øvre Slottsgate, right on Christiania Torv Square , opposite the old town hall. A previous building at this point, the Hellig Trefoldigheds kirke (Church of the Holy Trinity) from 1639 burned down on April 21, 1686. In the following years stables and a riding arena to the neighboring Akershus fortress were located here , until plans for a new church to be built at this point came up around 1860. Work began in 1868. The neo-Gothic church with space for around 1,250 worshipers was built from yellow bricks and had a striking bell tower on its south side , which was flanked by two smaller towers. As it turned out later, under the church there was an insufficiently stable building site for the size of the building. As early as 1902, major stress and settlement cracks were evident in the facade and masonry . The transept and the choir area were particularly affected . By the summer of 1903, the nave was renovated and secured for around 80,000 Norwegian kroner .

During a church service on Sunday, October 23, 1904, at 11:28 a.m., an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 shook the area around Oslo and caused great damage to the newly renovated nave. After this event, the church was closed to visitors. Further investigations revealed severe structural damage to statically relevant parts. Around 1918 the northern part of the nave with the choir and transept was demolished. The painter Per Krohg had his studio in the southern part with the tower in the 1920s , until the building was completely demolished in the spring of 1928. A large part of the yellow bricks could be preserved and was later used for the construction of the Jarhuset office building in Oslo.

At the site of the church there was initially a parking lot, and in 1953 a gas station. The residential and commercial building "Akersgata 2" has been located there since 1996.

The demolished church is listed as a former cultural and historical monument under the number 84738 in the register of the " Riksantikvars ", the state preservation of monuments.
