Johannes Olm (born September 29, 1895 in Mönchengladbach ; † September 2, 1953 in Arnsberg ) was Mayor of Arnsberg from 1949 to 1953 .

Life

He was a carpenter by trade and took part in the First World War as a soldier . After he couldn't find a job in his profession after the end of the war, he became a miner in the Ruhr area. In 1920 he found employment as a carpenter in Arnsberg and passed his master craftsman examination in 1925. He had been a member of the SPD since 1922 and became a city councilor and magistrate in 1927. He completed vocational retraining and had been a clerk at the local employment office since 1931.

He turned against the emerging National Socialism in the city early on . On April 1, 1933, because of his anti-fascist attitude, he was forcibly removed from his workplace by SA men and taken into so-called protective custody. Afterwards he was under police supervision and worked again in his learned profession. Olm started his own business in 1939 and had been the master of the carpentry trade in the Arnsberg district since 1945 .

He also got involved again in the reconstruction of the SPD in Arnsberg. On December 6, 1949, Olm was the first social democrat to be elected mayor in Arnsberg. Among other things, he succeeded in setting up the company Sauerländer Spanplatte. During his time the planning for residential houses for the officers of the Belgian garrison falls, who could use it to vacate apartments for Arnsberg citizens. The structural development of Gutenbergplatz, the expansion of the hospital, the construction of Schreppenberger Strasse and the construction of the forest cemetery also fell within his term of office.
