Johannes Schmidlap (* before 1561 , probably in Schorndorf ; also Johann ; also Schmidlapp ) was a fireworker , war technician and rocket pioneer in the 16th century.

Schmidlap was most likely born in Schorndorf, not much is known about his life. Occasionally he is referred to by the nickname of Schorndorff or the elder . In 1560 he published his work for the first time: Artificial and honest Fewrwerck zum Schimpff with Johann vom Berg and Vlrich Newber in Nuremberg , the work was reprinted in 1564 and reissued in a new edition in 1590 and 1591 by Katharina Gerlachin . As a contemporary of the rocket engineer Conrad Haas , who also dealt with multi-stage rocket systems, he was probably in contact with him. Doru Todriciu notes striking similarities between the images and text passages in the publications by Conrad Haas and Schmidlaps. Schmidlap was probably the first to successfully launch multi-stage rockets .
