Life

Conrad Haas came to Sibiu in 1551 with the army of the Roman-German King Ferdinand I as a kitman and gunsmith , where he took over the management of the arsenal.

Between 1529 and 1559 he added an inherited, from his ancestor Hans Haasenwein (“auß dem haasenhoff bey landshut”) between 1450 and May 1459, essentially based on the fireworks book of 1420 , which was widely used in the late Middle Ages , and which he named Art book (Sibiu State Archives, Varia II 374), and in which on 282 pages, among other things, the two known areas of application as fireworks carriers and rocket technology weapons are described. This manuscript was only found in the Sibiu State Archives in 1961. The Hermannstädter Kunstbuch , the third part of which was written or compiled by Conrad Haas and also contains content that goes beyond weapon technology, deals with detailed manufacturing issues of rocket construction, whereby it also explains the operating principle of the rocket and describes a large number of rocket types, for example the Multi-stage rocket , the bundle rocket and the idea of the modern spaceship. It also deals with the arrangement of fuel sets in stage rockets, various fuel mixtures including liquid fuel, and introduces delta-shaped stabilizing fins and bell-shaped nozzles. In the last paragraph of the work Haas writes: But my Rhat defends Friedt and no war, let the rifles be under the roof, so the bullet would not be fired, the pulffer neither burned nor wet, so the prince retained his reputation, the gunsmith Belly; that is the Rhat, so Conrad Haas admitted. Before this manuscript was discovered, the first description of the three-stage rocket was ascribed to the Polish weapon designer Casimir Simienowicz in his work Ars magna artilleriae pars prima from 1650.
