Johannes Waldburger
Johannes Waldburger (born July 30, 1903 in Teufen AR ; † February 2, 1984 in Herisau ) was a Swiss carpenter and architect. He designed and built more than 60 buildings of different typologies, mainly in the Appenzellerland. He consistently orientated himself on the traditional buildings of the region and developed them further with contemporary materials and construction methods.
Life
On March 31, 1931, Johannes Waldburger married Julia Emma Hedwig Langhans in Davos. The couple lived in the Sertig Valley during the first few years of their marriage. The second residence was in Schwellbrunn, where Waldburger built a private house with an attached architectural office in 1963. Like his wife, he was convinced of the Mazdaznan doctrine and lived by its principles.

Architect in the Appenzellerland
Although Waldburger had learned his trade with the nationally active architect Louis Lobeck, he oriented himself towards local characteristics. His sense of proportion is remarkable. His buildings stand out as independent objects carefully placed in the landscape. Initially he constructed the buildings out of wood. Later contemporary building materials such as brick and concrete were used. His first office was in Schwellbrunn, south of the church.
With a small team, he built over 60 buildings over a period of around 30 years. Waldburger traveled with his employees to Venice, Freudenstadt and Marseille. The team also went on trips to the Säntis, as Waldburger was the “house architect” of the Säntis lifts in the 1960s.
Projects outside the Appenzell region
Waldburger hardly built outside of the canton's borders. His typical architectural style is not evident in the Bubental and Untersiggenthal block of flats in the canton of Zurich. There, Waldburger oriented himself on the common architectural style of modern housing developments. He also dealt with high-rise buildings. This is how contemporary apartment buildings with generous living space were created.
