Johannes Xiphilinos (monk)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Xiphilinos , scribe of an excerpt from Cassius Dio , lived in Constantinople in the second half of the 11th century. He was a monk and a well-known preacher, a nephew of the patriarch of Constantinople of the same name (Migne, Patrologia Graeca, cxx.).

The extract from Dio's work was prepared by order of Michael VII Parapinakes , but is incomplete. It includes the time from Pompey and Caesar to Severus Alexander . In book 70 of his copy the reigns of Antoninus Pius and the first years of Marcus Aurelius seem to be missing, while in books 78 and 79 a mutilated original was probably used. Xiphilinos divided the work into sections, one each for the life of an emperor. He left out the names of the consuls and occasionally changed or corrected the original. The excerpt has value as it preserves the essential events of the time in which Dio has gaps.
