Johannes von Wilenstein was a knight who lived at Wilenstein Castle in the northwestern Palatinate Forest (today's Rhineland-Palatinate ) in the 13th century . He may have remained without male descendants since the noble family died out in 1300.

Wilenstein Castle

Wilenstein Castle, the family seat, was built by the Hohenstaufen emperors in the middle of the 12th century . It is located at an altitude of 400 meters to the right above the Karlstal der Moosalb near Trippstadt . The Wilensteiners, who belonged to the lower nobility and were presumably descended from the Wartenbergs , were given it as a fiefdom that ended when the family died out. The family got its name after the castle. In the partially restored castle, a private facility is now operated, which is called the "Burg Wilenstein Youth Home" and is mainly used for leisure stays by school classes, church groups and associations.

Hamlet Johanniskreuz

The hamlet of Johanniskreuz is named after Johannes von Wilenstein, who was involved in numerous feuds . This is located seven kilometers southeast of the castle on the Palatinate main watershed and is now part of the Trippstadt community. In 1269, the knight Johannes attacked a stone cross that the Lords of Hohenecken had erected as a national emblem and had his own coat of arms carved three times . "Mr. Johanns Creutz" was first mentioned in a document in 1551 and still exists today in real terms and in the place name.
