The Johanneskirche is a Protestant church building in the Gemen district of the city of Borken , on Coesfelder Strasse at the corner of Ahauser Strasse.

history

It was built in 1703 as a reformed church. It is the only surviving baroque Protestant church building in the Münsterland and belongs to the complex of Burg und Freiheit Gemen.

Description and equipment

The church is a hall building. The church windows with their coats of arms (early 18th century) are particularly significant . Most of them can be traced back to foundations, such as those of Princess Maria von Hessen from the Wisch-Bronkhorst house (1730) or the Wesel brewery and baker's office and the Schiffergilde (1710).

Next to the pulpit are two windows that were donated by the Prussian royal couple Friedrich I (1712) and Sophie Luise (1708) and restored in 1897 at the instigation of Wilhelm II . They remind of the feudal sovereignty of the Counts of Kleve over Gemen, which has existed since 1250, whose legal successors were the Electors of Brandenburg and thus the later kings of Prussia.
