The Johannes Church in Cuxhaven - Sahlenburg , Nordheimstraße 26 / An der Johanneskirch, has existed since 1939.

history

In 1939 Sahlenburg had 837 inhabitants. The growth of the population made a church necessary. In August 1939, the clinkered parish hall with a gable roof and church service room was inaugurated. At the end of 1940 it was confiscated by the Todt Organization of the Reich Ministry for Armaments and Ammunition .

In 1946 the building was used again for church purposes; further components and rooms were created.

In 1947 a very simple open wooden bell tower was built. The first Sahlenburg bell was on loan from Döse . In 1966 a new square, partly open steel bell tower with a pointed, clapboard tent roof was built. The ring now consists of three bells. The bell from Döse was returned.

A special feature are the paraments (artistically designed textiles) on the altar and chancellery. The antependia were designed and hand stitched by Pastor Gunter-Ortwin Kühnel, who preached in Sahlenburg from 1969 to 1989. The bronze crucifix is from 1975. In 2012 the church was renovated, a false ceiling was removed and the high roof structure was clearly visible inside; the previously dark hall became light. The window with the four evangelists was moved to the east wall of the altar.

Parish

The Evangelical Lutheran parish in Sahlenburg became independent in 1969; it was previously connected to the church in Döse. The church was named after the evangelist John .

The parish has offers for women, the elderly, senior gymnastics, scouts and an active team to climb an eight meter high climbing wall from 2003 in the anteroom (called tower ).

There has been a parish office connection with the Kreuzkirche Altenwalde since 2018 .
