The locust hair gnat ( Bibio johannis ) is a species from the family of hair gnats (Bibionidae).

features

The mosquitoes reach a length of 4–7 mm. They have a black shimmering thorax .

The males have large compound eyes. There is a distinctive black stigma on their wings. The tibia of the males are colored light brown. The head, thorax and abdomen are covered with thick hair.

The females, on the other hand, have small compound eyes. The femurs are colored reddish brown, except for the black apical end. The tibiae are also reddish brown.

distribution

The species is widespread in Europe. It is also found in the British Isles.

Way of life

The mosquitoes fly from April to July. They can be found on the edges of forests and hedges, but also on water. The larvae develop in the litter layer. They feed on decomposing organic matter.
