John Best (bishop)

John Best († May 22, 1570 ) was Bishop of Carlisle .

Best was from Halifax and attended King Henry VII's College from 1538 to 1539 . In 1550 he married Elizabeth Somner. In 1553 he became a canon in Wells and in 1559 he was made rector of Romaldkirk . On March 2, 1561 he was appointed Bishop of Carlisle. His predecessor in office had carried out the coronation of Elizabeth I in the Roman Catholic rite despite her Protestant faith.
