John C. Butcher

John Charles Butcher ONZM ( John Charles Butcher ; born March 31, 1933 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand mathematician. He has specialized in numerical methods for solving common differential equations in the area of general linear methods , in particular the Runge-Kutta method , and is one of the most important people in this field in the past decades.

Butcher studied at the University of Auckland and received his PhD in 1961 from the University of Sydney with Harry Messel (The application of digital computers to calculations in cosmic ray physics). He then went to the Universities of Sydney, Canterbury and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). From 1966 he was a professor at the University of Auckland , from 1999 as professor emeritus. The Butcher tableau and the Butcher group for the representation of the Runge-Kutta method are named after him .

In 1980 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand , whose Jones Medal he received in 2010 and whose Hector Medal he received in 1996, and a lifetime member of the New Zealand Mathematical Society in 1998 and its Fellow in 1999. In 2010 he became a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and in 2008 an Honorary Fellow of the European Society of Computational and Applied Mathematics. In 2013 he became Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. In 2011 he received the van Wijngaarden Award.
