John Cadbury (born August 12, 1801 in Birmingham , † May 11, 1889 ) was a British entrepreneur.

Career

Cadbury was a member of the "Religious Society of Friends" ( Quakers ) and founded the chocolate company Cadbury Limited in Bull Street in Birmingham in 1824 , a company that now operates worldwide. John Cadbury was also known for his social reforms. The motivation for founding his company was to discourage people from consuming alcohol. The negative attitude towards alcohol arose from his Quaker beliefs (see article " Quaker product ").

Cadbury was married twice. His first wife, Priscilla Ann Dymond, died just two years after they got married in 1826. Cadbury had seven children with his second wife, Candia Barrow. Two of his sons, Richard and George , continued to run the company.
