John Coates (lawyer)
John Dowling Coates (born May 7, 1950 in Sydney ) is an Australian lawyer , sports official and since 2010 President of the International Court of Sports (CAS) .
General
John Coates studied at the University of Sydney and received his Bachelor in Law and qualified for the career of a Solicitors . He was active as a rower and started for the Sydney Rowing Club .
Offices in sports associations
From 1983 to 1988 Coates was President or Chairman of the Australian Rowing Association. Before that, in 1981, he became a member of the Australian Olympic Committee . From 1985 to 1990 he was Vice President, since 1990 he has been President of the Australian NOK. As Chef de Mission he accompanied the Australian Olympic teams to the Summer Games in Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
In 1994 he became a member of the International Sports Court (CAS). He became Vice President in 1995, and then became President in 2010.
Activities within the IOC
Coates was elected an IOC member in 2001. He has been Vice President of the IOC since 2013. Since then he has also been chairman of the coordination commission for the 32nd Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020 .
