John E. Breen

John Edward Breen , called Jack Breen, (born May 1, 1932 in Buffalo, New York ) is an American civil engineer.

Breen studied civil engineering from Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in 1953, from the University of Missouri with a master's degree in 1957 and he received his doctorate in 1962 from the University of Texas at Austin . From 1957 he was an assistant professor at the University of Missouri and from 1959 he conducted research at the University of Texas at Austin, where he became an assistant professor in 1962 and later professor. From 1984 he was Nasser I. Al-Rashid professor of civil engineering there. There he was director of the Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory.

He dealt with reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures, their standardization, safety issues and bridge construction with prestressed concrete. He was a member of standards committees of the ASCE and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and chaired the Building Code Committee of the ACI.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering . In 2002 he received the Freyssinet Medal , in 2000 the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering and in 2003 the Albert Caquot Prize . He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and an honorary member of the American Concrete Institute, from which he has also received several awards, such as the Structural Engineering Award in 2002. In 2003 he received the Bridge Engineering Research Award from the Bridge Engineering Association and in 2005 the John A. Roebling Medal from the International Bridge Conference.

He was also an engineer in the US Navy.
