John F. Carroll (* 1932 in Buffalo , New York , † 1969 in Lackawanna , New York) is still the third largest person in medical history. He was 264 cm tall, but had a standing height of only 244 cm because he had a curve in the spine. In 1968 he shrank to 239 cm because the condition of his back had worsened. Shortly before his death in 1968 he had a standing height of 234 cm. Carroll suffered from severe spinal curvature ( kyphoscoliosis ) and acromegaly gigantism.

Carroll was born in Buffalo and is also known as the "Buffalo Giant" in medical literature. His extraordinary growth began at the age of 16 and continued until his death, despite extensive treatments at Mercy Hospital. He was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawanna.
