John Fiske (media scientist)

Stanford H. John Fiske (* 1939 ) is a British media and cultural scientist .

With his essays and books, John Fiske made an important contribution to media and cultural studies; His texts on television and books on popular culture, readings of popular and popular culture became particularly popular .

In his writings, Fiske advocates a comparatively radical view of pop culture , which - in contrast to Adorno's culture industry thesis, for example - is certified as an active reinterpretation on the part of consumers. B. TV, pop music or branded goods consumers in the game for cultural meanings must be viewed as active and productive players; active participation and a certain “subversive potential” are seen even in mere consumption.

Life

In 1963 Fiske received a Bachelor of Arts with distinction from Cambridge University . In 1967 the Master of Arts followed at the same university .

From 1977 to 1981 he was the Chair of the Media and Communications Examination for O-Level and CSE of the Welsh Joint Examination Council. From 1979 to 1981 he was a consultant on the examination board in London for "Advanced Level Communication" and later worked as an examiner in various bodies at various universities in Great Britain and Australia ( Curtin University ).

Since 1982 Fiske has been a member of various communication and science associations, primarily in Australia. Since 1987 he has been a professor in the communication science department at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . He retired in 2000.

Since then, he and his wife Lisa Freeman have been trading in antiques.
