The father, John F. Herring Sr., was one of the most famous artists of his time who devoted himself to the subjects of horse painting and horse racing and was very popular with the English aristocracy . John Frederick Jr. learned painting from his father, whose popularity made his career easier.

John Herring Jr. shared a love of painting with his younger brothers Charles and Benjamin, while the sisters, Ann and Emma, both married painters. These three out of four brothers painted in a similar style to their father and often worked together on the same picture.

At the beginning of his career he signed his works with J. Fred Herring or J. F. Herring junr, but when he was painting alone, he switched to J. F. Herring. In the years after 1836 Herring Sr. felt restricted by the growing popularity of his son of the same name and began to mark his own pictures with "senr" at the end of the signature.

John Herring Jr. continued in his father's tradition of painting equestrian and equestrian pictures, but broadened his subjects as his artistic skills improved: animals on the bank of a river or scenes on a farm became characteristic of his work.
