John Phelps "Jack" George (born April 26, 1882 in Croydon , † November 26, 1962 in Purley ) was a British athlete.

Career

George started for the South London Harriers . He competed several times in the championships of the English Amateur Athletic Association (AAA). In 1905 and 1906 he was able to reach the finals in the 440 yard run. In 1907 he won the race over 220 yards and in that year was counted by some experts as one of the strongest runners in the world. The following year he was third over this distance.

George competed in the 1908 Olympic Games in London for the UK. Over 100 meters he was able to prevail against the Norwegian Oscar Guttormsen with 11.6 seconds and made it to the semi-finals. In this, however, he only finished fourth, so he missed the final. Over the double distance he gave the Dutchman Victor Henny no chance in his lead . He crossed the finish line with a ten-yard lead and safely qualified for the semifinals the next day. However, this was won by the later silver medalist Bobby Cloughen , while George was eliminated in third.
