John Hamilton, 1st Lord Belhaven and Stenton (* before 1624, † June 17, 1679 in Holyrood Abbey , Edinburgh ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the son of Sir James Hamilton, 1st Baronet , and his wife Margaret Hamilton. Both came from the Hamilton family . When his father died, he inherited the latter's title of Baronet , of Broomhill, which had been given to him in 1635 in the Peerage of Nova Scotia. He lived in Broomhill, Fife . On December 15, 1647 he was raised to Lord Belhaven and Stenton .

He was married to his fourth-degree niece, Margaret Hamilton (* before 1625; † 1695/96), an illegitimate daughter of James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton . With her he had four children, a son († around 1661), whose name has not been passed down, and three daughters:

  • Anne Hamilton, ⚭ Sir Robert Hamilton, 1st Baronet (of Silvertonhill), John's fourth-degree great-great-great-nephew
  • Margaret Hamilton († 1674), ⚭ Sir Samuel Baillie of Lamington († 1668)
  • Elizabeth Hamilton, ⚭ Alexander Seton, 1st Viscount Kingston (1621–1691)

In 1648 he took in the army of half-brother of his wife, James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton , in the campaign for England for the Liberation of King Charles I in part. When the army was defeated by Oliver Cromwell's troops at the Battle of Preston , he managed to escape. In 1652 he had to flee from Scotland to England before the parliamentary troops. After the monarchy had been restored with King Charles II in 1660 , he was appointed to the Scottish Privy Council on July 11, 1663 .

Since his only son and heir to the title had died in 1661, he returned his lord title to the crown on February 10, 1675 and in return received a renewed award of the same title, retroactively to December 15, 1647 with regard to the protocol order of precedence , this time with the special note, that in the absence of male descendants of his own, the title could also be inherited by John Hamilton (of Presmennan), his sixth nephew and at the same time husband of his granddaughter Margaret (daughter of his eldest daughter Anne), and his male descendants.

He died on June 17, 1679 in Chorherrenstift Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh and was buried there on June 20 1679th The aforementioned John Hamilton inherited his title of lord, his title of baronet expired because it was not provided with a corresponding inheritance regulation.
