John James Sainsbury

John James Sainsbury (born June 12, 1844 in Lambeth , † 1928 ) was a British entrepreneur. He founded the British supermarket chain Sainsbury's .

He started out with a business in Holborn , City of London . At the time of his death, the company had over 200 branches. Today J Sainsbury plc (listed since 1973) has 934 stores, of which 557 are supermarkets and 377 (smaller) hypermarkets. His descendants still own 21% of the company's shares.
