John Korsrud

John Korsrud is a Canadian composer and jazz trumpeter.

biography

Korsrud, who lives in Vancouver, studied at the University of British Columbia until 1990 and regularly attended courses at The Banff Center between 1984 and 1994 . From 1995 to 1997 he studied composition with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory in Amsterdam .

As a trumpeter Korsrud u. a. in Berlin, Havana, Chicago, Lisbon, Amsterdam and Montreal and with musicians such as George Lewis , Butch Morris , Barry Guy , Kenny Wheeler , Han Bennink , the NOW Orchestra , the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation and the Duke Ellington Orchestra (conducted by Paul Ellington ).

Since 1990 he has led the Hard Ruber Orchestra , with which he has performed in Europe and Canada, recorded two albums and won the Alcan Arts Award in 2005. He also directs the salsa / latin jazz orchestra Orquestra Goma Dura , with whom an album has been created so far.

As a composer, Korsrud u. a. for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra , the American Composers Orchestra , the Albany Symphony New Music Festival , the Turning Point Ensemble and for Dutch ensembles such as the group LOOS , the Tetzepi Bigtet , the Zapp String Quartet and De Ereprijs .

For the music for the film Heroines (2002) he received the Leo Award and the Golden Sheaf Award and was nominated for the Gemini Award . He received another Leo Award for the film music for Prisoners of Age . Furthermore, Korsrud realized multimedia projects such as The Elvis Cantatas (1994, 1996) in St. Andrew's Wesley Church , The Ice Age: The World's First New Music Ice Show (2000) in the Kerrisdale Arena and Enter / Exit (2005) on Vancouver East Cultural Center . The CBC produced a sixty-minute version of the Elvis Cantata under the title Cantata for the King .

In 2001 Korsrud was awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize , and in 2003 he became the second Canadian to receive a grant from the Italian Civitella Ranieri Foundation . Between 2005 and 2007 he was composer in residence at the Banff Center, and also teaches at Vancouver Community College and Capilano College .
