John W. Fisher

John William Fisher (born February 15, 1931 in Ancell , Missouri ) is an American civil engineer.

Fisher studied civil engineering at Washington University with a bachelor's degree in 1956 and at Lehigh University with a master's degree in 1958 and a doctorate in 1964. He was professor at Lehigh University since 1969, from 1988 as Joseph T. Stuart professor . He was co-director of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural systems (ATLSS) research center.

It deals with fatigue and brittle fractures in steel structures such as bridges, with welded, riveted and bolted connections and with steel composite structures. He served on the Williamsburg Bridge Committee in New York from 1978 to 1988 and was a member of the New York Bridge Safety Working Group from 1990 to 1998. In 1982 he was visiting professor at EPFL Lausanne.

In 2001 he received the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering . He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering , a corresponding member of the Swiss Engineering Academy and an honorary member of the American Society of Civil Engineers . Engineering News Record voted him among the 125 Years ... 125 Top People in 1999 . In 1988 he received an honorary doctorate from EPFL. In 2000 he received the John Fritz Medal.
