John Weller (born November 28, 1877 - August 31, 1966 ) was an English inventor and designer. In 1904 he founded Autocars and Accessories , Ltd. to build the three-wheeled cargo carrier Auto-Carrier . This resulted in the car brand AC in 1907 and AC Cars Ltd. in 1921 . emerged. As early as 1922, Weller sold his company shares to Selwyn Edge and its partners, but remained in the company as an engine developer.

Many of Weller's inventions and patent applications relate to automatic tensioning and guiding devices for chain drives . Since the late 1920s, there has been a search in the automotive industry for better and inexpensive drives for overhead camshafts for four-stroke engines. A constructive solution is the so-called Weller drive , in which a spur gear drive is combined with a chain drive using Weller's patents. This solution was taken up in 1927 by AJS to replace a vertical shaft drive in a motorcycle engine and in 1932 by Hermann Reeb in the newly designed engine of the Horex S 600 .
