John Williams (saxophonist)

John Overton Williams (* 13. April 1905 in Memphis (Tennessee) ; † 24. November 1996 in Columbus , Ohio ) was an American clarinetist and alto saxophonist of Swing .

Williams was self-taught and began his musical career in Paul Banks' band; from 1924 to 1928 he led his own band and accompanied the vaudeville group “Seymour and Jeanette” in Pittsburgh . From 1928 to 1939 he worked with his wife, the pianist Mary Lou Williams , in Andy Kirk's band in Kansas City , then retired from the music business for a while and joined Cootie Williams in 1942 . After that Williams said goodbye to the jazz scene.
