Johnny Gammage

Johnny Gammage (* 20th July 1964 ; † 12. October 1995 in Brentwood ) was an African-American motorist in an inhabited almost exclusively by whites suburb of Pittsburgh in the US state of Pennsylvania died after being stopped by police because of "irregular driving" had been.

The police reported that he was killed in a "scuffle". The coroner announced that he had died from kidney failure caused by pressure on his neck and back. The story hit the headlines US-wide and prompted an extensive Justice Department investigation into the conduct of US police officers.

Three white police officers were charged with negligent homicide . One of them was acquitted in November 1996 and promoted a short time later. The other two were also acquitted after two failed trials, according to the legal principle Ne bis in idem .

The act is described in the song Police Story by Anti-Flag and in Triple 7 Special by the rapper Sun Rise Above .
