Johnny Kalsi (born 1967 in Leeds , Yorkshire ) is a British drummer with Indian roots who is best known in Germany as a member of the band Afro Celt Sound System . He is also a member of the London music collective Transglobal Underground , the band The Imagined Village and founder of the Dhol Foundation .

Life

Kalsi was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1967. The family came from the Punjab (Punjab), but the grandfather had already emigrated to Kenya. The parents immigrated from there to England.

Kalsi discovered his love for music at an early age, learned tabla and taught himself the drums when he joined various school bands. It was shaped by the experience of an Indian wedding with relatives, where the bhangra dance group of some uncles performed and Kalsi was completely fascinated by the dhol . Since there were no teachers for dhol in what was then the United Kingdom, he transferred the tabla techniques he had already learned to the larger drum and developed the necessary striking techniques himself. In addition, he adapted the rhythm notation of the tabla for the dhol and thus created a notation system that became established worldwide.

Kalsi began to teach at the request of interested parties, from which The Dhol Foundation developed: Both a training system for Dhol and other rhythm instruments, as well as a music formation that mixes Bhangra with Western musical styles and has now released five albums.

In addition, Johnny Kalsi and The Dhol Foundation worked with many artists, including a. Peter Gabriel, Avril Lavigne, Cliff Richard, and Robert Plant and Jimmy Page . Kalsi pieces have also been selected for films such as Gangs of New York (Martin Scorsese) or "The Incredible Hulk" (Louis Leterrier).

Dhol design

The classic dhol has a convex body. Kalsi found out that this form is only necessary for the goat skin, which is used for both drum surfaces, to be sufficiently stretched with cords. By using metal clamps, as they were already in use with the Dholak , he was able to achieve the necessary tension with a completely cylindrical body and in 1984 had a "Straight Barrel" dhol made according to his own ideas.
