The Jonas Island ( Russian остров Ионы , Ostrow Iony ), formerly Saint Jonas Island , is an uninhabited Russian island in the Sea of Okhotsk . It is isolated, almost 250 kilometers north of Sakhalin and 330 km south of Okhotsk .
The eight hectare and 150 m high island was discovered in 1789. Since mid-19th century American hunted here whalers about 20 years the bowhead whale . Since 1994 the island has been in a nature reserve of regional importance with high bio-productivity . It is inhabited by sea birds and Steller sea lions . BirdLife International has designated the island as an Important Bird Area (RU138) since 2004 .
The island is named after the Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Jonas (1448–1461).
