Jonathan Paul Harvey (born June 13, 1968 in Liverpool ) is a British playwright.

Harvey studied at the University of Hull and then became a teacher at a comprehensive school in Thamesmead , London . There he was commissioned to write a play for the Royal Court Young People's Theater: “Wildfire”, which premiered in 1992 at the Royal Court Theater Upstairs. In the same year he also wrote his best-known and most successful piece to date, Beautiful Thing . The story of two 16-year-old classmates Jamie Gangel and Steven Pearce, who experience their first love, was premiered on July 28, 1993 at the Bush Theater, London.

The play was so enthusiastically received in every theater where it was performed that the television station Channel Four Films commissioned Harvey to write a screenplay for the film in 1996. Harvey expanded his play to make it cinematic, and the film was directed by Hettie McDonald , starring theater students Glen Berry (Jamie) and Scott Neal (Steven). The film was also a great success.

Other plays were for example:

  • Babies - 1994
  • Boom Bang A Bang - 1995

He also wrote scripts for television, including the successful comedy series "Gimme Gimme Gimme". Most recently Harvey wrote the book for the Pet Shop Boys musical "Closer to Heaven".
