Rock formation Hvidkleven ("White Rock") next to Jons Kapel

Jons Kapel ("John's Chapel") is a rock formation on the west coast of Bornholm , about 7 kilometers north of Hasle . The rock formations are the result of waves hitting the rock at a time when sea level was significantly higher than it is now. The cliffs are about 41 meters high. The cliffs are named after a hermit who is said to have inhabited the caves there. John's caves are visible from the beach below the rocks.

geography

The rocky cliffs of Jons Kapel, which overlook the west coast of the island, can be reached from the parking lot at Jons Kapelvej by a steep staircase along a small stream called Askebækken. Jons Kapel can be seen from the beach, north of where the path hits the coast. The rocks are made of Vang granite , named after the fishing village of Vang to the north. There are several caves in the rocks. John's cave is high above the sea. North of the cave is a nearly vertical rock wall known as Hvidkleven ("White Rock"). The caves to the south are called Jons Sovekammer (John's bedroom), Jons Sacristi, Jons Spisestue (John's dining room) and Jons Madkælder (John's food cellar).

Climb

Climbing is not allowed on the "Hvidkleven" and directly at the "Jons Kapel", but about 50 meters south of it there are some climbing routes up to the 6th degree ( UIAA ), including the over 70 meters long climbing route "Jons long marchen", which is the longest climbing route on Bornholm and in Denmark.

The legend of John

According to legend, John was a hermit who was sent to Bornholm to bring Christianity to the island. He sat down in a cave in the rock. The Bornholmers were curious to see who John was and would visit him while he was telling them stories from the Bible . After all, so many people visited him that there was not enough space for all of them in the cave. So that everyone could hear his stories, John climbed the rock to a natural vantage point called Prædikestolen ("Sermon Chair"). It was said that John also preached to the seagulls and the waves.
