Hasle is a Danish port town in the middle of the west coast of the island of Bornholm , which is closely linked to the history of the island. This is where the men came together in 1658, who, under the leadership of Jens Koefoed , decided to liberate Bornholm from the Swedish occupation forces. 1603 inhabitants live in the city (as of January 1, 2020).

Hasle is about eleven kilometers north of Rønne and about seven kilometers west of Klemensker .

history

Hasle received city rights in 1555. Hasle's coat of arms, a white four-leaf clover on a blue background, has been known since 1584.

After a war against Sweden in 1657 Denmark had to cede its possessions in southern Sweden and Bornholm to Sweden. Even today people in Hasle are proud of the freedom fighters from Hasle, who, under the leadership of Jens Pedersen Kofoed (1628–1691), organized an uprising against the Swedish occupiers, which is why Sweden returned Bornholm to Denmark in 1658. Today a memorial on the market square in Hasle commemorates the freedom fighters.

Sights and special features

The church is worth seeing, the oldest part of which is the late Gothic nave . It has a Low German altar from the 17th century, a renaissance pulpit from 1610 and instead of a church tower, a roof turret made of timber framed in 1758 . The tenor Vilhelm Herold (1865–1937), who was born in Hasle, is buried in the cemetery.

In the cemetery surrounding the church, there is also the almost 2 m high rune stone Marevadstenen from around 1100, which is unusual because of an engraved cross . The runes are arranged in a spiral on the stone.

On the market square in front of the town hall, which was built in 1855, there is a memorial to the freedom fighters Jens Pedersen Kofoed, Peder Olsen, Niels Gumløse and Pastor Povl Hansen Ancher from Hasle, who fought against the Swedish occupation of Bornholm in the 16th century. The memorial was erected on December 8, 1908, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the uprising. A monument to the Danish King Christian X (1870–1947) rises next to it.

In the center of Hasle, a handicraft center was set up in the 19th century merchant's farm Grønbechsgård , whose permanent exhibition with the works of 60 well-known Danish artists and changing exhibitions on an area of 1500 m² attract many visitors.

The restored old smokehouse at the harbor, one of the last of its kind, is also popular. One of the five buildings has been converted into a museum that explains the history and importance of the herring smokehouse for Bornholm in the 19th century. Hasle celebrates the herring festival in July . There used to be herring smokers south of the port. They have been repaired and are operated the old way. The herring is smoked with wet alder wood . Today, Bornholm granite , fish and grain are mainly handled in the port .

East of the village at the fork in the road to Rønne, Hasle and Klemensker is Bornholm's highest rune stone , Brogårdsstenen from around 1100. Its height is 2.67 m and its width 1.40 m, and it served as a bridge over the river until 1868 Bach Baggeå.

economy

At the end of the 18th century, coal was dug on Bornholm. In the process, layers of clay were removed, which turned out to be a high-quality raw material. In the neighboring town of Muleby, the Hasle Klinker- og Chamotttestfabrik , which was once well-known far beyond Denmark, developed , which existed from 1843 to around 1997 and was Bornholm's largest employer in the 1950s with up to 1,200 employees. Their products were transported from the factory to the port of Hasle on a specially built narrow-gauge railway, the Hasle Klinker- og Chamotttestfabrik industrial railway .

The search for coal resulted in two artificial lakes:

  • Smaragdsø is by the clinker factory in Muleby, only separated from the Baltic Sea by a dam and the beach.
  • Rubinsø with its steep, densely vegetated banks is a little closer to the town of Hasle.

Surroundings

To the south of Hasle are pine forests and a stony sandy beach. The northern coast is rocky and reaches considerable dimensions with the over 40 meter high cliffs of Jons Kapel and Hvidkleven. Here the Redningsstien hiking trail leads along the coast via the fishing villages of Helligpeder and Teglkås to Hammershus .
