Vestermarie is a small town with 250 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea . Vestermarie is about nine kilometers east of Rønne and about eight kilometers northwest of Aakirkeby .
Bornholm had two Marienkirchen in the Middle Ages. To distinguish them, the western church was named Vestermarie Kirke and the eastern Østermarie Kirke . Both gave the surrounding villages their names: Vestermarie and Østermarie .
The village is located in the parish of the same name Vestermarie ( Vestermarie Sogn ), which until 1970 belonged to Harde Vester Herred in what was then Bornholm's office . With the dissolution of the Harden structure, the parish was included in the municipality of Aakirkeby , the municipality in turn merged with other municipalities in the Bornholm regional municipality after a referendum on January 1, 2003 . Between 2003 and 2007 it was independent and since January 1st 2007 it belongs to the Hovedstaden region .
