Old and new church in Østermarie |
Østermarie is a small town with 490 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea . Østermarie is about four kilometers southeast of Østerlars and about nine kilometers west of Svaneke .
The Marienkirche, built in the 12th century, Østermarie Kirke , gave the place its name. In 1891 it was partially demolished and replaced by a new building.
The village is located in the parish of the same name ( Østermarie Sogn ), which until 1970 belonged to Harde Øster Herred in what was then Bornholm's office . With the dissolution of the Harden structure, the parish was included in the Allinge-Gudhjem commune, the commune in turn merged with other communes into the Bornholm regional commune after a referendum on January 1, 2003 . Between 2003 and 2007 it was independent and since January 1st 2007 it belongs to the Hovedstaden region .
From 1916 to 1952, Østermarie was a railway station on the route operated by Alminding-Gudhjem Jernbaneselskab A / S (AGJ), which connected the port cities of Rønne and Gudhjem .
