Aarsdale (also Årsdale ) is a fishing village with 375 inhabitants located on the east coast of Bornholm between Svaneke and Nexø (as of January 1, 2020). The name Aarsdale was first mentioned in 1410 as Osdael , which meant something like rock bottom or valley .
history
There are well-preserved half-timbered houses in the village that are more than 200 years old. The fishing port, which is relatively large for the small town, was built in 1869 and expanded in 1959. With more than 30 fishing trawlers at times, the fishery produced high fishing quotas. In 2007 only seven cutters were registered, a consequence of the decline in fishing. From the former several smokehouses in town, only one still exists today.
The landmark of the place and a much-visited tourist attraction is the still functioning Dutch windmill from 1877. It is one of 13 windmills still in existence on Bornholm and one of the best-preserved windmills in Denmark , which is operated by the fourth generation.
