Snogebæk is a small fishing village in the southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm , which lies between Nexø in the north and Dueodde in the south. The village has 683 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and belongs to the Povlsker parish .
history
The fishing village was first mentioned in 1555, but it is believed that the place was inhabited as early as the Middle Ages. The name Snogebæk is derived from Snobeck, the snake and the brook. The few residents lived from cattle breeding, agriculture and fishing. The first port facility was built right on the coast in 1869, but the port quickly silted up. As early as 1888, a new island port was built , which is connected to the town by a 100 m long jetty. (There are two island harbors on Bornholm , the other is in Arnager .) Today, sandstone banks can be seen on both sides of the jetty. Today the port is mainly used as a dinghy and fishing port.
Snogebæk experienced greater growth in the 19th century, when new houses were built between the otherwise very different farms. To the north near Balka and to the south near Bro , large holiday home areas emerged in the 1920s, which attracted tourist-oriented businesses in the port area.
Today, Snogebæk lives mainly from tourism, in addition to still active fishing.
Geology and nature
The bottom of Snogebæk consists of sandstone, also called "Balka sandstone" or "Hardeberga sandstone".
To the west of Snogebæk is a large wetland, Hundsemyre , which has been a nature reserve since 1977 and has a rich bird life.
